A Guide to IBDP Internal Assessment Grading!

The grading system of the International Baccalaureate program is unique and involves students, teachers and the external that all together play a part in the IBDP evaluation process.

One of the main parts of the IBDP curriculum is international assessments that are marked internally by the teachers at IB schools. Students need to pass internal assessments to meet the criteria for getting the diploma. IB IAs weighs 20 per cent of the total final grade.

How do IB Internal assessments work?

International assessments are generally in the form of projects, written or oral exams, workbooks or experimental work according to the selection made by the students.

Here's an example of that!

  • Geographical fieldwork.
  • Artistic performances.
  • Mathematical investigations.
  • Experimental work for sciences.
  • Oral work in Languages

For a science subject internal assessment, students have to do research on a specific science-related topic by using research methods and experimental techniques. Majorly, IB sciences internal assessment contains in-depth research details of the topic including the background and experimental evidence.

The same goes for humanities; a research study is conducted on a selected topic.

In economics, students have to pick up an article to do a short analysis. A student is expected to complete 3 International assessments to successfully obtain the diploma.

How IB IAs marked?

IBDP internal assessments are guided and marked by the teachers internally in the schools which possibly raise the chances of biases. Therefore, IB has set up regulations to fix this issue. IB has assigned an external examiner to recheck the internal assessments in each school to reduce the chances of biases and to ensure that students are graded fairly. This is just a reviewing process to accurate the internal grading. The external examiner is responsible to ensure that the teacher has assessed fairly keeping in consideration all the leniencies and harshness. The external examiner has the authority for any score adjustments if required.

Once the grading is done, it is forwarded to students. Let's suppose, if an assessment is graded 20 internally, and the moderation score is 18 then the overall score will be 18.

Teachers with prior IB experience are often appointed for the moderation grading and therefore confirm the overall score.
