Crucial Concepts Checklist for IBDP Physics M24 Exam

Congratulations on reaching the IBDP Physics finals! No need to worry, as Blen is here with some helpful tips to assist you in your preparation. While IBDP Physics can present its challenges, not all concepts covered in the course will necessarily appear on your final exam.

Drawing on the advice of IB Experts, Blen has pinpointed the most probable concepts to be tested in the May 2024 exams. To make the most of your revision time, it's crucial to prioritize the topics with the highest likelihood of being examined.

This is the last time May cohort would be facing Paper 3, so on the afternoon of Thursday 25th April, 2024, you'll be facing both Paper 1 and Paper 3 consecutively. Paper 2 follows the next day.

Each paper has its unique characteristics and patterns to watch out for. Blen will provide guidance through the exam papers, helping you pinpoint the most critical concepts to focus on. By concentrating on these areas, you can reinforce your understanding and confidently approach the exam.

IBDP Physics Paper 1 Approach:

 Some Facts:

  • For DP Physics SL, you'll encounter 30 multiple-choice questions to be tackled within 45 minutes, while DP Physics HL presents 40 MCQs to solve in 60 minutes.

  • Calculators are not permitted, but you'll have access to the IBDP Physics Data Booklet.

  • Given that over 50% of questions involve multiple steps, the exam presents added complexity.

  • Additionally, keep in mind that Grade Boundaries might see some adjustments, possibly resulting in a 7 awarded for 63% in SL and 68% in HL.

Predicted Topics in SL:

  • Topic 2: Mechanics

  • Topic 5: Electricity and Magnetism

  • Topic 7: Atomic, Nuclear and Particle Physics

  • Topic 4: Waves

  • Topic 6: Circular Motion and Gravitation

Predicted Topics in HL:

  • Topic 2: Mechanics

  • Topics 4 & 9: Waves

  • Topic 5: Electricity and Magnetism

  • Topic 10: Fields

  • Topic 11: Electromagnetic Induction

Advice for Success:

  • Prepare thoroughly across all topics for Paper 1, with particular attention to the commonly examined areas highlighted above.

  • Feel free to annotate your Question booklet, as your annotations will not be assessed.

  • Pay close attention to decimal places and powers, as they often provide clues for eliminating incorrect answers.

  • Consult the relevant formula in the booklet if you encounter difficulties.

  • Manage your time effectively, considering the limited allocation of 1.5 minutes per question.

  • If you encounter a challenging question, don't spend too much time on it; it's acceptable to skip and return later.

  • Attempt all questions to maximize your chances of success, as there is no penalty for incorrect responses.

IBDP Physics Paper 2 Approach:

 Some Facts:

  • In DP Physics SL, you will encounter 5-6 extended response questions to tackle within a 75-minute timeframe, while DP Physics HL presents 7-8 extended response questions to be answered in 135 minutes.

  • You are permitted to use a calculator during this exam, and the IBDP Physics Data Booklet is provided for your reference.

  • Prepare for a challenging experience as completing all questions may be difficult within the allocated time.

  • Despite the challenges, take note that Grade Boundaries are typically set at a lower threshold. For instance, achieving a grade 7 might be attainable with scores as low as 63% in SL and 59% in HL.

 Predicted Topics in SL:

  • Topic 2: Mechanics

  • Topic 4: Waves

  • Topic 3: Thermal

  • Topic 8: Energy Production

Predicted Topics in HL:

  • Topic 2: Mechanics

  • Topics 4 & 9: Waves

  • Topic 7: Atomic, Nuclear and Particle Physics

  • Topic 10: Fields

  • Topic 12: Quantum and Nuclear Physics

  • Topic 8: Energy Production

Guidance for Success:

  • Explore your strengths within the frequently examined topics highlighted earlier.

  • During the 5-minute Reading Time, choose questions that align with your confidence levels.

  • Refer to the relevant topics and utilize the data booklet effectively.

  • Before answering, review previous parts of the question for relevant information.

  • Adhere to the command words provided in the IBDP for accurate responses.

  • Consider the allocated marks for each question when structuring your answers.

  • Utilize the 'Ans' button on your calculator to streamline calculations.

  • Be mindful of units on graph axes, as they may impact gradient or area calculations.

IBDP Physics Paper 3 Strategy:

Some Facts:

  • For DP Physics SL, there are 1-2 option-specific extended response questions, while DP Physics HL includes 2-3 such questions.
  • Students in SL have 60 minutes to tackle these questions, while HL students have 75 minutes.
  • Both the calculator and IBDP Physics Data Booklet are available for use during the exam.

 Tips to Consider:

  • Prepare an OPTION topic in advance for Paper 3.
  • Ensure a solid understanding of Topic 1: Measurements and Uncertainties, as it constitutes a significant portion of the paper.
  • Be mindful of the units on graph axes, as calculations involving gradients or areas may be necessary.
