Understand IBDP as an IBDP Parent

If your child is soon to begin an IB program, you as the parent must be concerned about whether the program will be beneficial for your child and what advantages it offers for their continued learning, growth, and progress.

Your worry is understandable because every parent wants the best for their kids. To help you monitor what your child will do during the two years of the IB diploma program, we have provided a comprehensive IB diploma handbook.

What is an IB Diploma Curriculum?

The Diploma Program (DP) curriculum is divided into 6 subject groups and core, which covers the theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS), and the extended essay.

How long is the Program?

The IB diploma program is 2 years long and in 2 years your child will study courses selected from the 6 subject groups and the core group.

What six subject groups your child can consider?

Your child is allowed to select 6 subjects of his/her choice from the list of the following subject groups:

  • Group 1: Study of Language and Literature
  • Group 2: Language Acquisition
  • Group 3: Study of Societies and individuals
  • Group 4: Study of Sciences
  • Group 5: Study of Mathematics(AA & AI)
  • Group 6: Study of Arts

Your child is going to study the subjects from the above groups at both the HL and SL levels. To earn an IB diploma your child must take 3 HL courses.

Here is the sample subject selection from both HL and SL levels to give an idea for your child:

How your child will be graded?

In the IB program, you child will be assigned points from 1 to 7 in each subject and the maximum number of points your child can get in an IB diploma is 42 points for the subjects and 3 extra points for the core so that will be 45 in total. To pass an IB program, your child needs to secure at least 24 points in total.

Why your child should study IB?

  • An IBDP offers a practical curriculum and DP core
  • Strengthens the child both physically and intellectually.
  • Prepare them for the University and beyond world.
